EndNote: EN Online

Using EndNote to manage your bibliographic information.

What is EndNote Online?

EndNote Online (formerly EndNote Web) is the web version of EndNote.

EndNote Online has similar, but more restricted, functionality to the desktop version of EndNote. It can be used to collect and manage references, create bibliographies, and insert citations into Microsoft Word using the Cite While You Write function.

You can add references, share your references with colleagues through the groups function, and sync with your desktop library so that you can access your library when you are away from your desk or at another computer.

EndNote Online can be used for a stand alone library or for transferring or accessing references when you are using more than one computer, and for collaborative sharing of libraries.

Hints, tips, and handy links

In your preferences options you can choose to automatically sync your EN library - this is the default - or you can deselect this option and sync when you want to -  select this in your desktop EN library - Edit - Preferences - Sync

Create an EN Online Account

We recommend that you create an EndNote online account through EndNote desktop to give you maximum storage capacity and access to local styles.

To set up an EndNote online account:

  • Open your EndNote library
  • Choose the 'Sync Library' icon from the tool bar   Syn icon for Windows version (Windows)  Syn icon for Mac version (Mac)
  • You will be prompted to login or register for an account
  • Follow the instructions on screen as appropriate and your desktop library will be synchronised with your online library

Please see the box below for a short, comprehensive video tutorial on how to synchronise your online EndNote library to a second computer (e.g. home desktop or laptop).

Synchronizing EN Desktop and EN Online

This video tutorial will show you how to:

  1. Set up an EN Online account
  2. Synchronize an existing EN desktop library to an EN Online library
  3. Synchronize an EN Online library to a 2nd  computer

To view your EN Online library - go to and login with your account details or select Help - Online library from the top menu in your EN library.

Please note:

  • You can only sync to one EN Online account
  • For the first synchronization a large EN library may take a long time - future synchronization will be much faster as it only syncs new references.
  • After synchronization any reference you delete will be deleted from both the desktop EN library and the EN Online library.
  • Group Sets will not synchronise to EN Online.
