About Library Search

Library Search is a tool that allows you to search for material held in or accessible via the University of Adelaide libraries. This guide provides information about using Library Search to find resources, assist in research, and also to access your library account information.

What's included in Library Search

If you are searching a specific book and you know the book title, click into Simple Search, enter the exact title into the search box. For the best results, using the drop down menus beneath the search box to make your search more specific, e.g. first drop down menu: resource type: Book, second drop down menu: to search for works which start with... , the third drop down menu to limit your search to: in the title.


If you are unsure of the exact title, it is best to do a keyword search,  and limit your search from drop down menu "Material Type" by selecting: Book.

If you are searching a specific journal article and you know the exact title of the article, click into Simple Search, enter the exact title into the search box. For the best results, using the drop down menus beneath the search box to make your search more specific, e.g. first drop down menu: resource type: Articles, second drop down menu: to search for works which start with, the third drop down menu to limit your search to: in the title.


If you do not know the exact title, it is best to do a keyword search, and limit your search from drop down menus by Publication Date, Material Type, language.

 

Advanced Search allows you to quickly choose title, author and subject options from the menus on the left and to limit your search by Publication Date, Material Type (e.g. books, journals, audiovisual) and Language, on the right.

Material Type limits are particularly useful for finding specific kinds of items, for example:

Find the journal Research in African literatures by limiting to Journals
Find the DVD Lantana by limiting to Audio Visual
Find a map of South Australia by using the in subject option (type "South Australia”) and limiting Material Type to Maps.

Tip: using Any will search for your key words in all fields. This can be a good option to broaden your search.

When you have found a relevant item on your topic, you can look for other similar items using its Subjects links, if available.

Choose the Details tab and view Subjects. Click on the most useful subject heading for your topic.

 

To find information on a topic, use keyword searching. Ask yourself:

  • What are the main concepts (key words) that I need to include in my search?
  • Are there any synonyms that I need to include?
  • Are there any alternative spellings for the words that I want to use?

You can use advanced seach techniques to create more sophisticated searches. In Advanced Search, enter your keywords using the options in subject or Any and choosing contains from the drop-down menu.

You can also use the search operators AND, OR and NOT but you will need to enter these words in capitals so that Library Search can interpret them correctly.

MyLibrary & e-Shelf

Signing in to Library Search allows you to access your MyLibrary account, request items and save items to your e-Shelf.

Click on the MyLibrary link in the top right corner of the search screen.

From the MyLibrary screen you will be able to view a list of titles for items that you currently have on loan and their Due Date.

Tip: all loans are renewed automatically unless another borrower has placed a request on it.

When you are logged in, you can save the details of books, journal articles and other material to your e-Shelf. These details will stay on your e-Shelf until you delete them.

To add an item from your search to the e-Shelf, simply click on the star to the left of the item's title.

You can also export selected records to EndNote using the drop-down menu in the top right corner.

You can also create Folders to organise your items, for example, for a specifc topic or assignment. To create a new folder, click on the New Folder icon in the top left corner. Give your folder a name and press Save.

Select the items you wish to add and use the Cut, Copy and Paste icons () to duplicate or move the items to your new folder.
