Law: Home

Primary v secondary sources

You will come across two types of sources when researching law.

Primary sources are the documentation that sets out the law:

  • case law (decisions of courts)
  • legislation (Acts of Parliament, subordinate legislation including Regulations & Rules)

Secondary sources are those that help us find and understand primary sources:

  • commentary services
  • dictionaries & encyclopedias
  • journal articles
  • books
  • indexes & digests
  • government publications
