 OpenAthens LibGuide

  • Why did we change services?

OpenAthens is a more flexible and secure way for users to access content. It aims to reduce the frequency of logging in, or use links directly from the Library, in order to access online resources. OpenAthens allow users to login directly with participating content provider, providing a more natural way of discovering content.

  • Does it look different?

From the Library: No. Online resources accessed from Library Search will be automatically updated to use OpenAthens.

Outside of the Library: Each content providers will be slightly different. Sites will usually have one of the following: Institutional Login, OpenAthens, Seamless Access, which may be accessed from their sign in or login links. Previously this was not possible, and content needed to be access from Library Search. You will only need to login once for all supported content providers.

  • How does it work?

OpenAthens connects participating content providers to The University of Adelaide’s Single-Sign-on service, Okta. If you have already logged in during your session you will not be asked to login again.

You may encounter some content providers which the University does not subscribe to. These providers won’t list the University of Adelaide as an option. To find out what the University subscribes to, you can visit the Databases page.

    * Do not enter your university credentials into any third-party websites. Ensure you only enter your login details into adelaide.edu.au websites only. For more information on being safe online, visit the University’s Secure IT page.

  • Will I need to update my bookmarks?

Possibly. If you have bookmarked content and the link contains proxy.library.adelaide.edu.au they will need to be updated. Find the most up-to-date links from Library Search or the Databases page.
