Extrinsic material are important materials that can provide guidance on the meaning behind, and the intended purposes of, an Act of Parliament
Material included:
- material associated with proposed legislation
- materials which do not form part of the Act itself, but may assist in the interpretation of the Act
- helps understand, define or interpret the meaning or intention of legislation
- useful in legal research
- includes Explanatory Memoranda (EMs), second reading speeches (sources from Hansard), government reports, Parliamentary Committee reports and Law Reform Commission reports
